10. TOP FLIGHT ORIGIN “Hal Jordan has the greatest origin, I think, in most of all of comics,” Johns says. “This guy from 'Top Gun' is flying through the sky, and boom, he's summoned to an alien spaceship and told, 'You've been chosen. You're the next member of the Green Lantern Corps. Good luck!' Then the guy dies! It's a fantastic, very compelling origin.”

9. COSTUME FOR THE AGES Superman's cape, Batman's cowl, Green Lantern's streamlined flight suit-as worn by Hal Jordan, that sleek, simple costume is an undisputed classic. “It doesn't have to be overcomplicated, and that's the best thing about it,” muses Johns. “Whenever you see someone wearing a Green Lantern T-shirt, it always has that classic logo. That's the one ingrained in society, like Superman's 'S'”

8. DANGER'S HIS MIDDLE NAME “ Hal is the original 'man without fear,'” Johns claims, and it's tough to argue with him. After all, Jordan's a guy who was breaking records and rules as a test pilot long before the Green Lanterns came calling. As Johns puts it, “He's someone who's always pushing it to the limit, always looking to fly faster and higher, just to see what happens. Hal's the guy who can stand alongside Superman, who can bump shoulders with Batman and not give a sh--.”

7. WHAT WOMEN WANT “The best thing about Hal is that whenever he walks in a bar, all the pretty girls look at him,” Johns laughs. “He's got the charm and the wit that Indiana Jones has.” Ladies of the DCU take note: The line forms to the left.

6. MAN OF ACTION Hal Jordan is one of the few superhero alter egos you wouldn't mind trading places with. “You don't really want to be Bruce Wayne,” says Johns. “Even Superman has a lot of weight on his shoulders. But Hal is one of the most fun characters around. You want to hang out with Hal Jordan. You want to be Hal Jordan.”

5. MIXED UP SPECTRE The color scheme may have been similar, but lets face it: This former Green Lantern and the supernatural Spectre were two great tastes that tasted blecchh together. Hal's bold, thrill-seeking, takin'-care-of-business personality and sci-fi roots just didn't mesh well with the all-powerful spirit of divine vengeance. As Johns sees it, “The Spectre is a concept that can stand on his own-and so is Hal Jordan.”

4. THE WRITE STUFF JSA, Hawkman, Teen Titans: Geoff John's resume reads like a how-to manual when it comes to reviving classic superhero concepts. “The bottom line,” says johns, “is that I love these characters. I love taking these characters and saying, 'Look at them-they're cool!' There's a reason they've been around so long, and they'll be around long after we're gone.”

3. HAL AND OLLIE REDUX Thanks to Kevin Smith's work on Green Arrow, we've got new adventures of the original Jordan/Queen hard-traveling' heroes team to look forward to if Hal goes green again. “The combination of Green Arrow and Hal is just fantastic-they've got great personalities,” gushes Johns. “The difference now would be that Hal isn't the one learning lessons anymore-he's beyond that. He's the one that leads the way.”

2. MARKED BY TRAGEDY It's only by seeing how far heroes can fall that we find out how high they can fly, and whether it's through the power of Parallax or the bottom of a bottle, we've seen Hal fall hard. “Hal has flaws,” Johns states simply. “We're gonna see some of those flaws exposed and exploited in Rebirth. It's really about picking himself up from the ashes. That's why he's so damned interesting.”

1. THE NATURAL Most superheroes-from Bruce Wayne to Peter Parker-can credit a traumatic experience for sending them down the path of the hero. Not so with Hal Jordan. “Hal is a born hero,” Johns says unequivocally. “Everyone else learned how to be heroes. Hal wasn't always 'super', but he was always heroic. For some reason, it's sometimes not cool to be a hero. For Hal, it is damn cool. It's okay to be the good guy, and that's what he is. And Rebirth is a reintroduction of why he should be your hero.”
